With the world experiencing the highest levels of displacement on record (UNHCR, 2021), an increased number of newcomer students are arriving in the United States having lived through difficult circumstances. Among these newcomers are refugees. Refugees are people who have fled war, violence, conflict, or persecution and have crossed an international border to find safety in another country (UNHCR, 2021). While these learners arrive with challenges, none of those challenges are new to the field. Refugees are finding success in our schools and beyond. This talk will focus on steps school leaders can take to create an environment that supports the persistence of these students and supports their teachers in practical ways.
